Why Video Games Are Not Fun Anymore!

The gaming fatigue is real and if you find yourself getting disdainful of gaming ,then you are not alone.

Ever come across a YouTube video or a Reddit forum that talks about why video games are not fun anymore? With a wide range of genres available ranging from platformers to MMORPG gamers are spoilt for choice. Yet many find themselves addressing their opinions on forums like Reddit that gaming isn’t fun anymore. We try to delve into the matter and try to better understand the reality behind the gamers’ ennui.

“Strange times we live in. We have a smorgasbord of options just waiting to be devoured, yet we stand paralyzed, gazing at all that goodness floating across the screen”

The Problem Of Plenty – Strange times we live in. We have a smorgasbord of options just waiting to be devoured, yet we stand paralyzed, gazing at all that goodness floating across the screen. Let’s face it, whether it’s Netflix with its plethora of TV shows and movies or Microsoft Game Pass, we spend more time looking at what’s on offer than actually consuming the content.

Reddit user Tantra_Charbelcher seems to have found a way to help end these struggles by advising gamers to keep a concise collection of games that they can play without getting too stressed about their backlog. However, even if you manage to get past the challenges of maintaining a bite-sized library, there are other factors that might keep you from gaming.

Boring Side Quests-This genre applies to RPGs and action-adventure games. Games that force you to complete grindy side quests before unlocking the main quests become tedious very quickly. While these games boast vast open worlds for gamers to explore, they often fail to add anything interesting to those empty spaces for players to engage with.

Assassin’s Creed games, including Assassin’s Creed Origins, have you grinding for hours just to level up for certain parts of the game. On the other hand, The Witcher 3 was a game that featured interesting side quests that compelled you to seek them out before returning to the main storyline. Other games known for including engaging side quests are Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and GTA San Andreas, among others.

Focus on Sequels-There are more than a dozen Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed games that have been released, with more set for future release. The Assassin’s Creed games usually follow the same formula of tracking and killing an enemy repeatedly. Call of Duty is no different, with almost the same content released year after year.

The practice of building a franchise and milking it to exhaustion is the epitome of capitalism and significantly impacts gamers’ interest. The original Gears of War trilogy was one franchise that demonstrated how sequels can be enjoyable if not overdone. The GTA franchise is another prime example of how to keep sequels fresh and interesting.

Lack of Innovation by Developers-When was the last time a racing game was genuinely fun? Did I hear you say Burnout 2 on the PlayStation 2, Motorstorm for the PS3, or Crash Team Racing? Sadly, many racing games nowadays feature massive (read: boring) open cities and countless cars to drive and unlock. Whatever happened to Destruction Derby? Where is the fun in crashing a car and not even noticing a dent? Where is the progression system from Top Gear 2 on the Sega Genesis, where you had to race and win to earn levels and upgradeable parts?

It’s not just about racing games; many genres have faded away. Remember the Strike series on the PlayStation 1? Nuclear Strike was innovation at its peak, allowing players to pilot not only choppers but also hovercraft and jets. Extreme sports games like Tony Hawk, BMX, and Downhill Domination have all been shown the door. Even realistic platformers like Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider have limited adaptations, with the Uncharted series leading the way on the PS4.

The Popularity of Games as a Service-Let’s all point our fingers at GTA V, shall we? Remember when GTA was all about its story and characters? Who would have thought that more than a decade would pass, and Rockstar still wouldn’t have released a sequel? Ever since Rockstar Games popularized GTA Online, they haven’t released a single-player DLC. GTA IV, on the other hand, received two standalone DLCs. Games like Apex Legends, Fortnite, and GTA 5 have shown that the games-as-a-service model is here to stay and will be the driving force of the gaming industry in the near future. While games as a service might seem sensible from a business point of view, with production costs skyrocketing, it takes the fun out of gaming with its pay-to-win mechanics.

  1. I think games are an expensive hobby and thr the older gamers are exhausted from work and family yet clinging on to games.
